The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist tells the remarkable and troubling story of Belle Gibson, a 21‑year‑old social media influencer whose meteoric rise — complete with a bestselling app, book deal and global fame — was built on a fabricated cancer narrative. When investigative journalists exposed her lie, the fallout was profound, affecting followers, brands and the wider discourse around social media authenticity.
As creative partners on this project, Holey & Moley were commissioned to design and produce an evocative visual identity and comprehensive graphics package that supports the series’ narrative power. From the outset, our approach was anchored in clarity, authenticity and emotional resonance: we needed visuals that could straddle the raw realism of archival material and the digital vernacular of social platforms.
We built a brand system rooted in digital interfaces — reimagining platforms like Instagram, Facebook, blogs, forums and newspaper headlines as layered graphical environments. These elements mirror the documentary’s investigative gaze, anchoring the viewer in the very ecosystems where Belle’s story unfolded. Our graphics team crafted bespoke typographic treatments and timeline motifs that feel contemporary yet timeless, ensuring the visuals serve the storytelling rather than overshadow it.
Each motion sequence was designed to feel purposeful and grounded, reflecting shifts in time and perspective while preserving the emotional core of the interviews and evidence. Through careful colour palettes, intuitive transitions and refined layouts, we supported the editorial team’s desire for honesty and visual tension — helping the audience see the unsettling contrast between online perfection and real‑world consequence.
Collaborating on this series with ITV/ITVX was a meaningful exploration of narrative, trust and design’s role in documentary storytelling.
