Primal Survivor: Extreme African Safari follows Hazen Audel as he undertakes an ambitious expedition through Africa’s Great Rift Valley – navigating deserts, waterways, and diverse wildlife while learning vital survival techniques from indigenous communities. The series blends high-stakes adventure with cultural insight, demanding a visual language that could enhance the journey without disrupting its grounded, documentary tone.
We were commissioned by Icon Films to build on the established Primal Survivor format, developing a refined map system and title package that would feel seamlessly integrated within the brand while elevating its visual storytelling for modern broadcast and streaming audiences on National Geographic and Disney+.
Our approach centred on clarity, realism, and flexibility. We designed a comprehensive suite of mapping assets, including a series-wide journey map, episode-specific route breakdowns, reprise maps, and title cards — enabling both macro storytelling and precise, location-led detail. Each element was crafted to support the narrative without drawing focus away from the lived experience on screen.
Using a hybrid 2D-3D workflow, we built richly detailed topographic environments in Cinema 4D. Terrain was carefully art-directed through subtle lighting, lens effects, and controlled colour grading, shifting naturally from dense forest greens to arid desert tones. Cinematic camera movement and parallax introduced depth and scale, while clean, purposeful graphic elements – route lines, markers, and labels – ensured information remained clear and accessible.
Flexibility was key throughout. The system was designed to adapt to different regions and narrative beats, allowing us to amplify terrain or guide attention where needed, while maintaining a strong sense of geographical authenticity and continuity across the series.
The result is a cohesive, cinematic mapping system that enhances narrative flow while respecting the integrity of factual storytelling. As Primal Survivor continues to perform strongly and expand globally, this project demonstrates how considered motion design can elevate established formats for contemporary audiences.
We’re proud to have contributed to a globally recognised series, and we look forward to collaborating on future projects that blend craft, clarity, and immersive storytelling.
