Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast
Motion Graphics | Branding | Titles | VFX
When Anthony Mackie returned to his hometown of New Orleans for Shark Beach: Gulf Coast, he faced a surprising new challenge: sharks preying on fishermen’s catches, a phenomenon known as depredation. As sightings increased along the Gulf Coast, Mackie set out to explore how these encounters reveal larger environmental shifts—connecting local fishing communities with marine scientists to uncover the story beneath the waves.
Holey & Moley partnered with National Geographic to shape the documentary’s visual identity, creating branding, opening titles, lower thirds, motion graphics, and visual effects that would guide viewers through a complex narrative with clarity and style. Inspired by the Gulf’s natural beauty and the drama of human-shark interactions, we developed graphics that are kinetic, cinematic, and informative, translating scientific data and real-world encounters into visuals that feel immediate and engaging.
Every element was designed to support the storytelling—animated overlays illustrate shark behaviour, while subtle motion cues heighten tension during each encounter, ensuring the audience feels both connected and informed.
The result is a documentary where motion graphics don’t just explain—they enhance the story, helping viewers understand environmental challenges while celebrating the spirit of exploration at the heart of Mackie’s journey.
This project reinforced the power of close creative collaboration, and we’re excited to bring the same clarity, craft, and visual storytelling to future projects where science, adventure, and narrative meet.
